In
Chorus we learn sight-singing using the moveable "Do"
method of solfege. Solfege is a method of assigning
syllables to notes of the scale to read tonal music.
The moveable "Do" method assigns the syllable
"Do" to the first (root, tonic) note of the
scale, followed by "re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do."
Therefore, no matter what key a song is in, we can call
the first note of the scale it is based on "Do"
and figure out how it sounds from there.
A more
thorough study of sight-singing using the moveable "Do"
method of solfege, is explored in class. This section
provides some practice exercises for getting familiar
with and proficient in using the solfege syllables.
Being able to sing these exercises does not mean you
will be able to read a piece of music on sight but first
you have to get familiar with your tools before you
learn to use them.
