LOVE ONE ANOTHER

John 13:1-38 (Go to NIV Bible Verses)

Key Verse: 13:34, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."

*Read John 13:1-38 carefully and prayerfully

WHAT IS “A NEW COMMAND”?

1. What was the occasion of this event (1-2)?
Who gave the new command (34; 3,14,31-32)?
Why was this given as a command? How is the new command different from the old (1Jn 2:8)?

HOW CAN WE OBEY JESUS’ COMMAND?

2. How did Jesus demonstrate his love to his disciples (1b,4-5)?
What do the words “to the end” imply about his love (1; 10:11; 19:30)?
Why did he do so (12-17)?
What is the significance of personally receiving Jesus’ love (8)?

3. What obstacles hinder establishing Jesus’ loving community
(6-11,28-29,36-38; cf. Mk 9:34; 10:35-37)?
Why did Jesus mention Judas’ betrayal (18-27; 6:70-71)?
What obstacles must we overcome to establish a loving community
(1Jn 4:7-12; Gal 2:20)?

WHAT IS THE IMPACT?

4. When we practice Jesus’ love, what blessings do we experience (17)? What is the impact of loving one another (35; 17:23)?

5. How can we practice Jesus’ new command?
How does this apply to us as husbands/wives, parents/children, national leaders/missionaries, and between neighboring chapters, and different cultures and generations?
