THE IMPARTIALITY OF GOD
Romans 2:1–16 (Go to ESV Bible Verses)
Key Verse: 2:11 "For God shows no partiality."
- In verses 1–3, what words and phrases does Paul repeat? Who is he contrasting here? What does it mean to “pass judgment”? Why does Paul repeat the expression “O man”? What does he mean that these people “practice the very same things” (see 1:29–31)?
- In verse 4, how does Paul describe God? What does it mean to “presume on” God’s kindness? What does it mean to repent? What will happen to judgmental people who refuse to do so (verse 5)?
- In verse 6, what is God’s principle for judging? What leads to “glory and honor and immortality” versus what leads to “wrath and fury” (7–10)? Why does Paul say “the Jew first and also the Greek” (9,10)? How does he describe God’s judgment (11)?
- What two groups does Paul discuss (12–15)? What is wrong with those who have the law (13)? What is wrong with the Gentiles (14–15)? What is Paul’s warning (16)?
- What does this passage say about God? In what ways are you stricter with others than yourself? How might you be presuming on God's kindness? What secret(s) do you need to bring to him? How can knowing his character change how you see and treat people?
