RECONCILED TO GOD

(The Fruits of Faith, Part 2)

Romans 5:6–11 (ESV)

Key Verse: 5:10, "For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life."

  1. How does Paul describe our former shared reality (6–8)? Why do you think he highlights this here?
  2. In these same verses (6–8), what did Christ do for us, and how does it distinguish God’s love from human love? Why does Paul emphasize this?
  3. What does Paul say about our present reality (9a)? What does it mean that “we have now been justified by his blood” (see also 3:24–25a)? Why do you think he repeats this?
  4. In verses 9–10, what specifically has Christ done to save us? Why is it important to ground our faith in what he has done “by his death” and “by his life”?
  5. Read verse 10. What does it mean to be “reconciled to God”? How does it resolve our former state of being under the wrath of God, and why do we need to be sure of this?
  6. What does this reconciliation do for us (11)? What does it mean to “rejoice in God”? How is it different from our old way of life?
