August United Friday Meeting: Testimonies, Conference Reports & Prayer Topics https://www.chicagoubf.org/ubf-blog/august-united-friday-meeting-testimonies-conference-reports-prayer-topics Tue, 27 Aug 2024 20:50:22 +0000 http://www.chicagoubf.org/?p=14624

For this United Friday Meeting, there were testimonies on the Roman’s Bible study, the Acts Sunday passage, a report on ESBC, a report on the CBF Summer Bible Conference, a new member’s testimony, Kenya Prayer Topics, and Ministry prayer Topcis for the upcoming Fall semester.

Sammy S. – Romans 12:1-21 KV: 2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
From this passage, he learned that God’s mercy enables him to present himself to Him. He is transformed and of a renewed mind. This key verse spoke to him because he described himself to be a stubborn person and of one track mind. He prays to be watchful of what God’s will is and not give way to fear.

Gia – Acts 6: 1-7 KV: 4, “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
From studying this passage he asks himself, what does it mean to have a life and character that is Christ-centered? He started to understand that it means to do everything in your life in reliance upon the grace and hope in the shed blood of Jesus. He realized he must have the same attitude with all the small things in his life. Now he knows that he must fill himself with prayer and the word of God so that the Holy Spirit can dwell in him and thus guide him in every step of his life.

Conference Reports

Tony- ESBC Report- KV of conference John 14:6, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
The conference took place from August 1-4 in Prague, Czech Republic. The Czech Republic is known as the most atheistic country in Europe, so to have a conference there was a powerful statement against the darkness there. The conference title was “The Way”. He expressed how he saw the love of Jesus in the 2nd generation members. From group Bible study he learned that “The Way” is the person Jesus whom we are to follow. As long as you follow Jesus, even if you don’t know exactly what to do, he will surely lead us. He learned that to follow Jesus is to go without knowing and believing that Jesus will take us in the best way.

Tim CBF Summer Bible Conference Report- KV John 1:12, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,”
They had the conference at the Brothern Retreat Center in Shipsewana, Indiana in the heart of the Amish country. There were 70 attendants, 53 children, and 17 adults. The children sang praises to God, shared testimonies, heard engaging messages, and played outdoor activities. Before the conference, they dedicated one week to studying the main messages, wrote testimonies, and prayed to have maximum Bible study and maximum fun time. They pray that each child may hold on to the word of God so that they have received it, and each may seek God with all their heart.

New Member Testimonies

Abraham – Pslam 37:5-6, “Commit your way to the Lord ; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.”

Abraham reflected in his testimony on how he had a full circle moment in his life: when he left Chicago to go to Portland back in 2012 and then was called back by God to start his 1 semester at the UIC School of Medicine. He shared how he was rejected by many schools before and through a door being opened at UIC he felt God vindicated him and like his key verse portrays he saw the Sun after months of darkness. God was calling him to examine what it means to commit his new way to him. He prays to establish a firm identity as a father of Faith, to adjust well to his new school schedule, and for his wife Gloria to grow both spiritually and physically healthy.

Gloria- Pslam 37:5-7, “Commit your way to the Lord ; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!”

After staying in the U.S. for about 9 months she has been reflecting on how she did many things in Korea, such as clubs and bible study and keeping herself busy. It was hard for her to balance her life and she reflected on how she knew of God and believed in him as her savior, however, she was not able to fully commit to him. She believed in God but she believed also in herself. Thus it was not easy for her to repent of her deepest sins. She gradually and truly believed that only God is good and righteous. She learned to have silent time with God. The only way she can guard her heart is by being still and listening to the voice of God.

Oscar & Gia from Oakton Ministry were Baptized https://www.chicagoubf.org/baptism/oscar-gia-from-oakton-ministry-were-baptized Mon, 29 Jul 2024 21:53:25 +0000 http://www.chicagoubf.org/?p=14480

On Sunday, July 21st, Oscar G. and Gia Huy N. from Oakton ministry were baptized. They gave graceful and honest testimonies of their faith in Jesus.

Oscar preferred to be baptized by immersion, so his baptism took place at 9:30 am in front of the Leningrad house in a small pool. Family members attended together along with Oakton ministry members and church members. His father opened the ceremony with a prayer. He said he had been praying and waiting for a long time for his son to be baptized. Oscar shared his beautiful testimony before the baptism. He was wandering for many years without knowing the meaning of life, indulging in many kinds of things in the world. P. Mark led the ceremony and it was a very meaningful and joyful ceremony that one lost one came back to God! Pray for Oscar, he is going to be the president at the OCC Bible club.

Gia was baptized at the end of the 11 am worship service where he also shared his baptism testimony. He opened up before the church about his life before coming to Christ. He and his family immigrated from Vietnam at the beginning of 2022. Growing up he never knew God and tried different religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. Out of curiosity and a deep longing to find the truth he came across videos explaining Jesus, his death, and resurrection, he further explored but was still lukewarm about his faith. Later through the Oakton ministry and studying the books of Romans, Genesis, and Corinthians his faith and understanding in God grew deeper. He realized that the pain and suffering he had experienced in his life were the result of spiritual sickness. Now he has no worries about school or life because he knows that God is in control.

Amen! Thank God for the moving faith of these two brothers. May God continue to bless their journey in faith and to be blessed and be a blessing to others.

July United Friday Meeting Recap: K-Stan Report & Testimonies on Acts and Romans Bible Study https://www.chicagoubf.org/ubf-blog/july-united-friday-meeting-recap-k-stan-report-testimonies-on-acts-and-romans-bible-study Mon, 22 Jul 2024 17:08:18 +0000 http://www.chicagoubf.org/?p=14451

K-stan Report

Joanne K. from Chicago UBF’s Loyola fellowship recently went on a short term mission trip to Almaty K-stan. She went with about 9 other people coming from different UBF chapters around the world. Some even coming from South Africa!

In a breif recap of her trip she shared how they went fishing at Al Farabi University, and went to Almaty UBF’s Sunday worship service. They invited students to campus bible study and the English club to play games and study the word of God. She expressed in her report that she really bonded with the people there and felt as close to them as family. Her keyverse and prayer topic throughout the mission trip was to have faith in the cornerstone Jesus. To overcome trials, and to have fellowship we need to rely on our cornerstone Jesus. 1 Peter 2:6 was her key verse: “For it stands in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’”

The next missions trip is scehduled to be in 2025. It will take place in Sri Lanka between May to July 2025. Please pray for the preparations and those who plan to go.

Testimony Presenters

Below are key points and bible verses shared by each person

Angelo (Oakton) – He learned that a prayer should acknowledge God’s soverignty, and God calls him to be bold and couragous. Acts 4:29 “And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, “

Gia (Oakton)- He learned that whenever he prays he should come to God with a humble attitude. Now he has strength through focusing on God’s glory. And he has hope in the promise that even through hardships there is always God’s glory in the end.

Jason (Lincoln Park)- He had a fear to invite friends to Bible study and speak about Jesus to them. He prays that God may give him strength to speak his name boldy. Acts 4:29 “And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,”

Yue Guo (UIC)- The religious leaders are like the modern political leaders, imagine trying to speak up to people like that. God revealed to him that his salvation was in academic success but now God has really made him evaluate his salvation and it’s really only through Jesus Christ, the son of God that he can attain salvation. Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Bahati (NEIU)- Through the Roman’s bible study she learned that “propotation” means mercy seat. Jesus is her mercy seat. Anyone who puts there trust in Jesus is saved. At a young age she relied on boys a lot to be her savior but ended up finding herself disappointed and hurt. But Jesus completely saved her and in him she became fully known and blessed by God. Jesus has given her hope. Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Joel (UIC)- He felt convicted and realized his thoughts on sins were twisted. These verses reminded him that he does have forgiveness for his sins but it was not just some free ticket to continue on sinning. He is in debt to sin but alive to Christ. Romans 6:1-2 ‘What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”

Rafael (UIC)- Romans has always been one of his favorite books of the bible. Through this passage he learned the heart that the apostle Paul had for the gentiles, and why he had such a servant spirit to them. It was becasue of the grace of Jesus. He is reminded why he should live and particapate in God’s kindgom work, for God’s grace in his life. He is also reminded of the importance to live by faith. Romans 15:14-20 “I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, “

Post-Graduate Fellowship Picnic https://www.chicagoubf.org/ubf-blog/post-graduate-fellowship-picnic Mon, 08 Jul 2024 17:32:13 +0000 http://www.chicagoubf.org/?p=14420

On Sunday, June 30th there was a Post-Graduate Fellowship Picnic at Hartigan Beach near the Loyola campus. Pastor Mark and our church intern Victor has been coordinating these meetings for recent college grads and those who are not formally part of a fellowship to have a place to belong and encourage each other in the faith.

This was the third of the post-graduate fellowship meetings and was a collaboration with NEIU’s young professionals group, which is a group established by Edward and Irma P. to encourage and guide recent grads who are now working in a professional field. There was an agenda planned for the day with eating, games, and one-on-one meetings to share personal and spiritual goals for the summer. It was a very blessed fellowship meeting at the beach where many young adults got to play games together and share prayer topics.

Loyola Summer Bible Academy: “Shout!” https://www.chicagoubf.org/ubf-blog/loyola-summer-bible-academy-shout Mon, 01 Jul 2024 20:59:40 +0000 http://www.chicagoubf.org/?p=14359

Loyola Fellowship hosted a Bible academy for 7 days at the Leningrad House from June 3 to 8 (Monday to Saturday). The theme was ‘Shout,’ based on Joshua 6:16b: ‘Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!’ Each day, different families led Bible studies using unique methods to represent each chapter. It was a time for young and old generations to come together, bridging generational gaps as the strong walls of Jericho were overcome by the power of God.

After the 7 days of Joshua Bible studies, on Sunday, they had a campus potluck and a group prayer walk on campus to practice what they learned. Please pray for the 70-day Jericho prayer walk on campus by each family that will participate at least once a week.
