SUPPRESSION OF TRUTH
Romans 1:18–21 (Go to ESV Bible Verses)
Key Verse: 1:21" For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened."
- In verse 18, what is being “revealed from heaven,” who is the source of this, and what is the target? (Note the contrast with verse 17.)
- In verses 18–21, list the actions of the “ungodly.” What are they doing with “the truth”? What is this truth?
- In verse 20, what attributes of God are “clearly perceived” in creation? Why does he want all people to know him? What does verse 20b say about the status of humanity?
- If God has made his nature plain to all, why do people suppress this truth?
- Read verse 21. What downward spiral is described? What is “futile” thinking? A “darkened” heart? What is the root of sin?
- How can we honor God as God and give thanks to him? How can we help the people around us?
