“I AM THE WAY, AND THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE”

John 14:1–14 (ESV)
Key Verses: 14:2–3, In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

  1. Review the immediate context at the start of chapter 14. The disciples are reeling from Jesus’ announcements that he is leaving, that one of them will betray him, and that Peter will deny him. What command does Jesus give them to soothe their troubled hearts (1)? When your reality gets shaken, where do you tend to turn for peace?
  2. Examine verse 6 carefully. Jesus doesn’t say “I’ll show you the way” or “I’ll teach you the truth” or “I offer the life.” He internalizes these realities into his own person. What’s the difference between trying to follow a system of rules versus walking with a Person through life’s unknowns?
  3. Look at the exclusive claim Jesus makes (6b). How does this definition of truth and life dismantle current relativistic frameworks? How does it bring clarity and hope to your daily life, rather than restriction?
  4. In verses 7–11, Philip demands, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” What does Jesus say about his total union with the Father? According to verses 12–14, what is the prerequisite and purpose of asking for anything “in his name” (meaning according to his character and mission)? How does this transform your prayer life?
  5. Review the cumulative weight of the previous “I am” statements (Bread, Light, Shepherd, Resurrection). How does this private declaration to his disciples that he is the way, the truth and the life link all the other “I am” statements to the character of God the Father? How can we live with this faith that we have seen and accessed the Father?
